Congratulations to Cpl Jill Marchessault, who was awarded the “Top cadet in 6 Platoon of the Basic Sports and Fitness Course” at the course final parade at Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre.

Cpl Marchessault attended the three-week Basic Sports and Fitness Course which prepares cadets to fulfill the duties of sports and fitness assistant at the Airdrie Army Cadets.  Cadets study the theory and the benefits of sports, learn muscle structure, injury prevention and safety, and nutritional planning. The also learn to lead warm-up and cool down sessions and assist in planning and running team sports.

During the summer, more than 1100 Army Cadets from western Canada will spend up to six weeks in Vernon, expanding the training they receive at their home corps, developing new skills and forming new friendships.

Back In The Good Old Days….

July 22, 2011 in Notices

Ever wonder just what exactly those kids away at camp are up too??  Check out this link to a video from 1955 that I found.  It’s definitely worth the wait to download and watch it.  It’s in black and white, has no sound, is kinda jittery at times like the camera guy had at least one too many cups of coffee but it’s hysterical!!  It shows the kids actually driving the military vehicles which is something I as a parent am glad that they don’t do anymore.

I also came across some funny photos from 1949 Vernon RCAC cadets.  It shows you that as much as things have changed, things have also stayed the same!

These kids are on a signal course in Vernon even though I swear they look like they're on Safari in Africa somewhere. I love that the hats are nearly identical to the ones they wear now except for the pointy bit at the top!!

This is also from cadets on a signal course. Things weren't exactly wireless back then...

This one is my personal favorite -- Tug of War!

They apparently taught them how to get stuck as well as unstuck by winching.

They were taught how to drive various heavy equipment like this Caterpillar in the days before insurance was considered "important"!

Vernon Cadet Camp

April 13, 2010 in Cadets Canada, Training

Well, it is a bit to late for  Army Cadet  summer training applications, but with summer coming fast (I say through the snow), I came across a great video of the Vernon Royal Canadian Army Cadet Summer Training Camp for those cadets hoping to go there this summer.

Not only is Canadian Army Cadet camp is free for selected cadets, they are also paid per week at camp.  In addition to making a litlle money cadets get the oppertunity to do a wide variety of activities including cycling, bushcraft, band, marksmanship, drill, and leadership.
