2011 Tim Hortons NHL Classic Update

February 19, 2011 in Events, Notices, volunteering

Airdrie Army Cadets who are carpooling to Mewata on Sunday will need to be at Tim Horton’s by 1100 and picked up at Tim Horton’s at approximately 1930.  Cadets going directly to Mewata Armoury should be there by 1130.  If you have any questions, please contact the Parent’s Committee President, Lorna Charlton.

The weather on Sunday is expected to be between -22 and -7, so please dress for the weather.  The cadets will be outside for at least 15 minutes and should dress in plenty of layers.

Here is a quick rundown of the schedule:
Arrival at Mewata Armoury is 11:30 AM,(meet at Tim Horton’s West side at 1100 for car pool).  Parents will be able to get on the bus with the cadets.  They will be bussed from Mewata to the bubble outside McMahon Stadium, where they get into their groups and get into order.  They will then be picked up on buses and taken across the street to the stadium in their groups.  That being said parents are going to be either in the bubble watching or inside.  Parents will not be outside watching the opening ceremonies.  After the opening ceremony cadets will be bussed back over to the bubble.  Lunch is supplied around 1400.  Dinner is not supplied but some fruit snacks and water will be.
Cadets are to wear as many layers as possible. They are to wear long sleeve light green shirts under their uniform.  Layers are a MUST!!! They will be checked to make sure they are wearing layers so this is mandatory! Cadets in highland kit were advised to wear nude coloured panty hose and leggings. They will only be out side for 15 or 20 mins but the warmer the better.  Black gloves are also to be worn, those $0.99 gloves can be found at Wal-mart.
We have five extra cadets that had no jobs on Friday night, however there will be jobs for them once they get there.  There are other cadets who might not show and this is a once in a lifetime event that the cadets are invited to attend. Parents can pick up cadets a Mewata if they chose not to watch the game, at approx 1500, You will need to get Lorna Charlton’s phone number to verify.  She will be at Mewata on Sunday.

Mewata Armouries – Nov 24

November 20, 2010 in Calgary Highlanders, Events, Notices, Training

Mewata Armoury C7 SimulatorNext Week (24 Nov 2010) cadets will be at Mewata Armouries in Calgary.

We are doing a car pool again and cadets carpooling MUST be at Tim Horton’s by Totem NO LATER than 1745 (5:45 pm).  We will leave at that time and will not return until 2130 (9:30 pm) at the same location.  We have 57 cadets, so the more drivers the better.

Cadets will be shooting the C7 rifle in the simulator at the armouries, they will also be able to buy stuff at the gift shop and look around the armouries.  They might get the chance to speak with some of the soldiers if time permits.  Parents are welcome to attend, parking will be at the Science Center.  Cadets can wear “Field Traing Dress” (combat clothing or civilian clothing with the corps shirt).

They MUST be on their best behaviour, the Calgary Highlander Reservists parade in the same building during the time that we will be there.

Highland Pipe and Drum Lessons

October 25, 2010 in Notices, Training, volunteering

There are free Highland Pipe and Drum lessons for cadets every Monday night from 1830 to 2100 (6:30pm to 9pm) at the Mewata Armory in downtown Calgary provided by the 2137 Calgary Highlanders Cadets based at the armory. While these classes are free for all Airdrie Army Cadets, it does require a commitment to attend as consistent practice.

Currently we have a high level of interest and have approximately 20 cadets who have expressed an interest in signing up.  We are now looking for parent volunteers to drive the cadets to and from the Mewata Armory each Monday night for the weekly practice.   If you are available and can commit to assisting regularly, please contact OCdt. Taylor as soon as possible so that we can figure out a car pool and get this started.

If there is continued enthusiasm and interest by all Cadets attending pipes and drums through out the year, next year our Corps will look into getting instructors that can come to Airdrie to teach the required skills.

Below is a short video of WO Taylor and Dakota White (formerly 2137 Calgary Highlanders Cadets and now a Calgary Highlander) playing at last year’s ACR.
