October 3, 2011 in Notices, Training

On Oct 19, 2011, the Airdrie Army Cadets will be holding parade at the Military Museums in Calgary (on Crowchild Trail across from the old Currie Barracks) from 1830-2130 (6:30-9:30).  Cadets will be able to learn about the Calgary Highlander Regiment and be able to obtain their head dress ‘Glens’ if they pass a written test.  This is the only way for cadets to earn their glens.

As usual, please bring a food donation for the veterans food bank.

Please note that there is no car pooling arranged for this.  Cadets are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from the museum.  If you need a ride, it is suggested that you talk to the other cadets to arrange something.

Oct 13 Parade at the Military Museums in Calgary

October 7, 2010 in Calgary Highlanders, Notices

On 13 Oct 2010 we will be attending the Military Museums on Crowchild trail, in Calgary. The cadets will get regimental training done with 2 retired soldiers from the Calgary Highlander Regiment.  New cadets must participate in a 40 minute presentation about the Calgary Highlander Regiment and then write a multiple choice test after the presentation.  Cadets will be required to get at least a 70% to pass the exam.  Once they have passed the exam cadets will be awarded and honoured to wear a Glengarry and Calgary Highlander cap brass.  Cadets will receive them in November or December when our shipment arrives.

We will be meeting at the Tim Hortons on the WEST side by TOTEM at 1745 (5:45) on Wed 13 Oct.  We will be leaving the museum at approx 2045(8:45) and returning back at Tim Hortons for pick up at 2115(9:15).  If parents can drive, they need to fill out the drivers log.  Please let me know how many cadets that you can hold in your vehicle and if your son or daughter needs a ride please let me know via email.  We need to transport 50 cadets so if you can find time to drive that would REALLY help us out.  Parents can also tour the museum for FREE on this night.

If the cadets can bring some food for the food bank (veterans) that would be great.

Please let Capt. Mark know know by 11 Oct if you can/cannot drive.

Welcome back Sgt. Russell!

April 17, 2010 in Notices

We would also like to welcome Sgt Russell back to the Airdrie Highlanders Army Cadets.  Due to some internal DND issues, he had left and it looked like he would not be back.  I know that a number of the Airdrie Highlanders Army Cadets, staff and parents were rather unhappy about this and we are thrilled to have him back!

He is certainly busy.  Besides helping the Airdrie Highlanders Army Cadets, he just finished work on Tanks and Tartan: Soldiers for 100 Years at the Calgary Military Museums

He is also getting ready for a Calgary Highlanders tour of historical battlefields in Europe.

Highlights include:

  • Parades at Juno Beach on 6 June 2010
  • Unveiling of plaques at Point 67 and Clair Tizon
  • Visit to Ypres and the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate
  • Vimy Ridge
  • St. Julien
  • Walcheren Causeway

If his flight back is on time, he should get back to Calgary just in time for the ACM dinner.

Tanks and Tartan at the Calgary Military Museums

April 17, 2010 in Calgary Highlanders, Events, Notices

Calgary Highlanders Regimental CrestThere is a new exhibit at the Calgary Military Museums, put together by Sgt Russell.  Tanks and Tartan: Soldiers for 100 Years is a joint exhibit commemorating the Centennial (1910-2010) of the founding of The Calgary Highlanders and The King’s Own Calgary Regiment.  The exhibit contains artifacts, photographs and artwork, including rare trench art.

It covers the history of these two units during peacetime and while on active service in World War One and World War Two. Also included are the experiences of individual members serving around the world on peace-support missions.

It runs until August 2010 and hopefully the Airdrie Highlanders Army Cadets will be able to go down and see it.
