Annual General Meeting – May 9, 2012

May 8, 2012 in Parents Committee, volunteering

Vote in the AGM electionsJust a reminder that Wednesday, May 9, 2012 is the Parent’s Committee Annual General Meeting! Please come out and volunteer to help out! If you can not volunteer for the board then at least participate in the elections. We need a few new board members and lots of helpers. If you want to help out, but don’t feel that you can commit to being a board member, please talk to the new Parent’s Committee President about how you can help out.

Please remember that the Airdrie Army Cadets is such a great corps because of great staff and great volunteers. It is people like you stepping up and helping out that makes us great and if you don’t, then who will?

We look forward to seeing you all there!

Tour de Airdrie — Sunday, April 22

April 19, 2012 in Events, volunteering

We will be doing our community volunteering at the Tour de Airdrie this year. This is mandatory for ALL cadets.

This event is being hosted by the rotary club and involves 5, 10 and 21 K marathon runs.

Our cadets will be helping to mark the route for the runners and handing out drinks to the runners.

All cadets should meet at 0800 at Genesis Place on April 22.

Cadets need to be in uniform with no tie. If they have pants (as opposed to kilts), please wear them.

Cadets need to bring a water bottle with them but will be provided lunch.

This event will be happening regardless of the weather so come prepared!

All cadets, regardless of seniority, need to attend this event!

Cadets can be picked up for Genesis Place at 1400.

Airdrie Legion Needs Volunteers

March 15, 2012 in Royal Canadian Legion, volunteering

The Airdrie Legion is looking for volunteers for Thursday night Bingos.

This volunteer opportunity would be best suited for parents and older cadets as it will be handling money.

Contact Jean at the Legion at 948-3000 to volunteer your services and for further details. Make sure that you let them know you’re with 3016 Airdrie Army cadets.  This is an ongoing opportunity to help out the Legion and make a difference. Volunteering is an extremely important component of cadets and should be a big part of all of their lives.

Our Corps in the News – Here’s the Scoop

Last but certainly not least, is the coverage of Heather Underchute’s award presentation in Here’s the Scoop.

Here’s the Scoop has been great to work with and very receptive to helping us publicize our corps.

Congrats again Heather and thanks so much Here’s the Scoop (especially Lois:))!!

Our Corps in the News – March 14 Airdrie Echo

March 14, 2012 in In The News, volunteering

Congrats to Heather Undershute for being featured on page 27 of this week’s Airdrie Echo! Follow the link to read the entire story here – http://eedition.airdrieecho.com/doc/Airdrie-Echo/airdrieecho_20120314/2012031401/

Heather’s volunteer award has now been featured in every Airdrie area newspaper (that I could find anyways…)

Congratulations Mrs. Undershute!!

Help (Still) Needed

March 11, 2012 in volunteering

Help Needed signIn January, I published a blog post looking for someone to learn and take over both the website and facebook accounts for the cadet corps. Unfortunately, there have been no responses.

I’m still looking for a replacement as my son will no longer be in cadets next year — as far as I know anyways. Teenagers do often change their minds without warning:)

Read the last blog post about what is needed and email me at pjkmitchell @ hotmail dot com if you are interested! If I don’t hear from anyone, I will leave it up to next year’s Parent’s Committee to sort it out.

Don’t forget — the annual general meeting for the Parent’s Committee is coming up! This meeting is vital for ALL parents to attend. The corps could not operate as cohesively without the volunteers that participate in cadets.

March 2012 Airdrie Army Cadets 3016 Press Release

March 9, 2012 in Contests, Honours, In The News, Parents Committee, volunteering

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 5, 2012

The Colonel Lee S. Thompson Award is presented in each zone to a parent volunteer who shows outstanding commitment and dedication to the cadet movement. This competition is open to parents of cadets throughout the entire province and involves approximately 39 different cadet corps. Nominations for this award are made by the corps Commanding Officer of the Corps’ League Representative. This year, the honour was presented to one of the 3016 Airdrie Army Cadet volunteers Heather Undershute. She was nominated by the 3016 Airdrie Army Cadets’ Commanding Officer Captain Tanya Mark. Her letter of nomination can be viewed here: http://airdriecadets.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Col-Lee-Thompson-letter-heather_undershute-3016.pdf

Mrs. Heather Undershute joined the corps in 2007 and took over the position of Treasurer on the parent’s committee board. She has held this position ever since. She has kept track of cadet bank accounts and stayed on top of gaming regulations for our casino fundraising events which occur every other year. Our first casino with Mrs. Undershute made approximately $55,000 and our second casino which was in February made approximately the same amount. Her work has been instrumental in keeping our corps going and becoming such a huge success. We have recently won a number of prestigious awards including Top Cadet Corps in the Southern Zone of Alberta, Top Army Cadet Corps in Urban Alberta in 2011 as well as both cadet and staff awards.

Mrs. Undershute has gone above and beyond the call of duty. She is always the first to volunteer when help is needed for our cadet group. She can be seen at nearly all of our activities including selling poppies, volunteering at events at the local Legion (where she is also on the board), volunteering and coordinating volunteers for the casinos and much, much more. She has a way of making parents, staff, volunteers and cadets feel at ease and welcome. Her never ending ability to help has aided our corps in countless ways.

On Feb. 25, 2012, Mrs. Undershute was presented with a volunteer service medal, Col Lee S. Thompson plaque and volunteer certificate from the Army Cadet League of Canada in recognition of her 5 years of service. We are extremely proud of her and feel lucky to have her as part of our corps.
