Congratulations to Pre Para Cadets

March 15, 2012 in Honours, Summer Camp, Training

Canadian Army Drop WingsCongratulations to Sgt Turner and Sgt Mitchell-Bentley who have been selected to attend a pre-para selection camp in Edmonton.  There will be 19 cadets attending this camp and there are 5 billets available for our region.  The cadets selected from this camp will then get to attend a 6 week Canadian Forces Cadet Parachute Course this summer at CFB Trenton.  The “jump wings” that they earn at this camp is then not only worn on their cadet uniform, but can also be worn should the cadet join the Canadian Forces after leaving cadets.

It is a huge honor for these cadets to be chosen and it is great that the Airdrie Army Cadets were able to get 2 cadets accepted the selection.

Cadets are selected based on a variety of criteria including apptitude, behavior and physical fitness.  The very minimum for the physical fitness is

  • 7 min 30sec mile
  • 7 chin-ups and
  • 32 consecutive sit-ups

To my knowledge, no Airdrie Army cadets have ever attended the parachute training camp and only one (Jesse Taylor?) has made it to the selection in the past.

Cadets in the Canadian Forces Cadet Parachute Course are also eligable for the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion (1CPB) Bursary.

SAT Trainer dates

February 3, 2012 in Calgary Highlanders, Events, Training

We have been offered 2 dates for use of the ST Trainer at Mewata Armories (801 11 ST SW, Calgary).  This is the rifle trainer used by the Calgary Highlanders.  This is a great experience for the cadets, especially if they like shooting!  This is not mandatory, but fun for the cadets!

Sections 1-3 will go on Feb 9 1830-2100
Sections 3-6 and the Air Rifle team on Feb 23 1830-2100

Cadets can wear combats or civilian clothing.

Be aware there is another cadet corps parading there on thursday evenings so cadets must be on their best behavior.

Parents are welcome to stay, there might be time for you to shoot too!  There will be no car pooling, cadets are welcome to post below if they need a ride. We really hope everyone can join in this great opportunity!!

If you cannot attend on that day for any reason just let Capt. Mark know and we can switch days, as long as there will be half the cadet corps attending on each day, more shooting relays will be allotted!

Hunter’s Education Training

January 22, 2012 in Army Cadet League, Events, Training

Hunter’s Education training highlights conservation efforts and environmentalist efforts as well as actual hunting per se.  All costs of our corps Hunter’s Education is administered by the Army Cadet League of Canada – Alberta Branch.  Thank-you so much to the League and our representative Ed Liukaitis!!

There is a lot of information to be learned for cadets getting Hunter’s Education.  All of the training dates are MANDATORY.  If any of the dates are missed, the cadets will not receive their certification.  This program is only run once every several years so if the cadets miss any of the dates, they may not be able to complete their certification within the cadet program.

Jan. 28 — All cadets who have not already received their Hunter’s Ed certification must be at Ralph McCall from 9-5 dressed in civilians.  Bring a lunch.

Jan. 29 — All cadets (including seniors with Hunter’s Ed already) must be at Ralph McCall from 9-5 in summer dress.  Bring a lunch.

Feb. 1 — Cadets must bring their kits to be checked to the CO parade.  Cadets must have sleeping bags for the upcoming FTX as well.

Feb. 3 — Alford Lake FTX.  We are meeting at the Airdrie Agricultural building around back.  The buses will leave at 5:30 PM.  Do not forget sleeping bags.  Seniors will do survival training and will be sleeping outside.

Feb. 5 — Parents will meet the buses coming back from the Hunter’s Ed FTX at approximately 3 PM at the Airdrie Agricultural building.  This time is subject to change depending on what time the cadets leave camp.

Summer Camp

January 14, 2012 in Cadets Canada, Summer Camp, Training

The deadline for applications to Cadets summer camp 2012 is quickly approaching.

Parents of new cadets can drop in between 7:30 and 9:00 PM at next Wednesday’s parade (Jan. 18) to ask questions of Captain Mark.  Please also feel free to email her with any questions or concerns that you might have.  Here is last year’s power point presentation on army cadet summer camps.  The dates will be different but the basic information is the same.  I will put an up-to-date presentation on the site when it is complete.

You can also check out the Cadets Canada site here for some general information.  As a parent of a cadet who’s gone a couple of times, I know how confusing all of the terminology can be and  that you are sure to have lots of questions.

Not all of the cadets who apply for camp will be able to go.  Cadets must have exemplary attendance, an impeccable uniform and attend all training events in order to even have much of a chance of being chosen.  Our CO does not chose the cadets who will go.  Rather, DND takes the CO’s recommendations as well as attendance into account.

The camps have absolutely no cost to parents whatsoever.  This includes transportation, gear, food, and pretty much anything else you can think of.  This is a great opportunity for cadets to make friends from all over the country, expand on the training learned throughout the year at cadets, do a bit of travel on their own and gain some independence.

Parents are free to visit cadets during their training camps but must keep in mind that they keep the cadets extremely busy.  There is usually a graduation ceremony or two at the end of camp that families are welcome to attend.  These events sometimes include hundreds of cadets from across the country and many family and community members in the audience.  The sunset parade in Vernon BC is truly a sight to be held!!  Stay tuned for more details in the coming days about the summer camp opportunities that the cadets may have this year!
