FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Summary: The 3016 Airdrie Royal Canadian Army Cadets are planning a trip to Europe in Spring 2013 and working hard to raise the necessary funds.
Airdrie Army Cadets Canadian Battlefields Tour of Europe
April 23, 2012, Airdrie, AB
Select members of the 3016 Airdrie Army Cadets are starting a fundraising campaign to make history come alive. The corps will be flying into Amsterdam and touring many historic Canadian battlefields throughout Europe including Vimy, Juno Beach and Normandy. This tour will include visits to some of the most important memorial museums such as Flanders Field Museum, the Jewish Museum and the Anne Frank House. Our corps will even be taking part in an important ceremony at Menin Gate. This wonderful opportunity will include touring Amsterdam, tours through the Vimy Region, Paris and Normandy in France as well as a visit to England.
The trip is being organized by the corps to take place in Spring of 2013 leaving almost an entire year for cadets to raise the much needed funds that are necessary to participate in this trip. Currently, cadets are chopping and bagging wood that has been donated by one of the cadet families and is selling bags of firewood for $10. Anyone interested in purchasing this wood can contact Paula at pjkmitchell@hotmail.com or by phone at (403) 590-0294. Each bag contains 12-14 pieces of aged, dry poplar wood that has been split and bagged by cadets who are planning on attending the Vimy Trip. This firewood will also be for sale at the Airdrie Home and Lifestyle Show.
Some of the other upcoming fundraisers that will help to subsidize the cost of the cadets going to Europe will include a bottle drive, a teen dance and a raffle. Cadets is a program that has costs subsidized by the government so that the program’s various programs and opportunities are open to youth from all walks of life. This national program helps youth learn to transition successfully into adulthood by providing training in leadership, volunteerism, environmentalism, physical fitness and community involvement. Our corps can be seen volunteering at many events throughout the community including at the Legion, participating in memorial events such as the St. Julien’s Parade in Calgary on April 21, volunteering to direct runners and traffic at the Tour de Airdrie and much, much more.
The 3016 Airdrie Army Cadets have been both extremely active and successful in the last couple of years beginning a biathalon program, marksmanship team and a full pipes and drums band. The staff and volunteers that are involved with this group have been doing everything in their power to continue to provide high quality training so that the young people involved have every opportunity that the cadet program can make available. With the increasing costs of transportation, rent and supplies coupled with the decreasing funding of the program from the government, community support is needed now, more than ever before. Please consider participating in one of our fundraising programs or making a charitable donation to the corps to continue to provide high levels of training at minimal costs to the parents and young people involved.
About the Corps
Our group currently has over 80 enrolled members of young people between the ages of 12 and 19, both male and female. All mandatory program costs are provided for by the corps but extra activities, such as the upcoming Europe trip, require fundraising in the community as well as fees for program participants. We appreciate the support of the community to make these fees as low as possible to make the training widely available to youth who wish to participate.
