FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 5, 2012
The Colonel Lee S. Thompson Award is presented in each zone to a parent volunteer who shows outstanding commitment and dedication to the cadet movement. This competition is open to parents of cadets throughout the entire province and involves approximately 39 different cadet corps. Nominations for this award are made by the corps Commanding Officer of the Corps’ League Representative. This year, the honour was presented to one of the 3016 Airdrie Army Cadet volunteers Heather Undershute. She was nominated by the 3016 Airdrie Army Cadets’ Commanding Officer Captain Tanya Mark. Her letter of nomination can be viewed here: http://airdriecadets.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Col-Lee-Thompson-letter-heather_undershute-3016.pdf
Mrs. Heather Undershute joined the corps in 2007 and took over the position of Treasurer on the parent’s committee board. She has held this position ever since. She has kept track of cadet bank accounts and stayed on top of gaming regulations for our casino fundraising events which occur every other year. Our first casino with Mrs. Undershute made approximately $55,000 and our second casino which was in February made approximately the same amount. Her work has been instrumental in keeping our corps going and becoming such a huge success. We have recently won a number of prestigious awards including Top Cadet Corps in the Southern Zone of Alberta, Top Army Cadet Corps in Urban Alberta in 2011 as well as both cadet and staff awards.
Mrs. Undershute has gone above and beyond the call of duty. She is always the first to volunteer when help is needed for our cadet group. She can be seen at nearly all of our activities including selling poppies, volunteering at events at the local Legion (where she is also on the board), volunteering and coordinating volunteers for the casinos and much, much more. She has a way of making parents, staff, volunteers and cadets feel at ease and welcome. Her never ending ability to help has aided our corps in countless ways.
On Feb. 25, 2012, Mrs. Undershute was presented with a volunteer service medal, Col Lee S. Thompson plaque and volunteer certificate from the Army Cadet League of Canada in recognition of her 5 years of service. We are extremely proud of her and feel lucky to have her as part of our corps.

Our own Heather Undershute was just announced the winner of this prestigious volunteer award presented in the Southern zone which recognizes the tremendous amount of hard work she has dedicated to our youth group over the last 5 years. Heather joined the Parent’s Committee in 2007 and took over the position of Treasurer where she has been ever since. She does a fantastic job keeping track of cadet bank accounts and staying on top of gaming regulations for our casino events. She has been instrumental in keeping this corps going and has been a big part of the success that they are now enjoying. Heather is always among the first to volunteer when parents are needed to step up to the plate — whether at the Legion, selling poppies, at casinos or practically anywhere.
The Colonel Lee S. Thompson award is given annually to the parent(s) of an army cadet who has dedicated themselves to furthering of the army cadet movement. The competition is open to parents of cadets throughout the Alberta. This is an extremely large competition involving approximately 39 different army cadet corps throughout the Alberta. Staff CIC members are not eligible for this award as it is only open to volunteers. Nominations for this award are made by the corps Commanding Officer or the Corps’ League Representative.
Our CO Captain Mark nominated Heather for this award and her letter of nomination can be read here – Col Lee Thompson letter-heather_undershute 3016. Heather is extremely outgoing and always has a smile on her face welcoming new parents to committee meetings and to the board. She sets others at ease and is always available to chat to other parents about the cadet movement.
Thanks so much Heather for your commitment and dedication to our great group of kids!! Heather will be presented a plaque at the Annual General Meeting of the Army Cadet League of Canada – Alberta Branch during the awards luncheon. I’ll post a picture of the award (and hopefully her with it) when she returns from the meeting at the end of the month.
Congratulations Heather Undershute!!!

You can download the 2011 Alberta Army Cadet League Photo Competition Rules and Entry Form here.
Each year, the Alberta Army Cadet League runs a photo contest. For the last two years, Capt. Mark has won the CIC award. The top two pics on the contest rules are Capt. Mark’s photos of Airdrie Army Cadets.
Cadets are strongly encouraged to give it a try. You might win! Last year, there were NO ENTRIES in the senior cadet category, so any senior entering a remotely reasonable photo would have won $250!
Like I said, give it a try. You could win!

The Airdrie Army Cadets Parent’s Committee is currently running a 50/50 pool and would appreciate it if parents could take some tickets to sell. Tickets are 3 for $5 and are available from Diann Marchessault. We will be doing the draw after the ACR. This is a great chance to help raise money to keep our corps running so well. Money is used for things like Highland uniforms, the ACR, cadet photos, etc.
A special thanks to Brent Marchessault for setting this up.
